Dome Kit FAQs

What is included in a geodesic dome kit?

At The Dome House, every kit comes complete with a pre-welded aluminum frame, double-pane tempered glass panels, a door (yes, a real one—not a zipper flap), and your pick of window options. You can go full-glass for the panoramic views or mix things up with wood-grade aluminum panels and insulation panels. Many other optional upgrades exist such as ventilation units, HVAC preparation, & much more.

Are geodesic dome kits hard to assemble?

Not with ours. The frame is engineered with precision-cut aluminum struts, and the glass panels fit like puzzle pieces that actually belong together. Most customers use a small team or local contractor and finish the shell in a few days. Bonus: no wild curves to deal with—just clean geometry and straightforward instructions.

Do you need a foundation for a geodesic dome kit?

Yes, we recommend it. Most use a concrete slab or pier foundation. It keeps the structure solid, makes it easier to insulate and finish, and helps meet code requirements. Engineering plans are available to simplify the permit process.

Are permits required for geodesic dome kits?

It very much depends on the State and county (inside the US). West Coast & North East municipalities tend to treat domes like any other permanent structure. Many other states, depending on your land zoning, do not. However, we offer engineering plans—so you can get through permitting without the hassle. Check with your local building department early to avoid surprises.

Are geodesic domes good for cold weather or snow?

Yes. The geodesic shape distributes snow and wind loads across the whole frame, the frame is pre-welded aluminum, and the glass is double-pane tempered glass. Stamped engineering documentation with snow-load details is available for your jurisdiction. Add a heating source—and, for the coldest sites, the Tetra Hybrid’s insulated panels—and you’re set for winter.

Can geodesic domes be customized?

Definitely. That’s actually one of the best parts. With our kits, you can choose different layouts—go full glass for jaw-dropping views or mix in aluminum panels with a wood-grain finish for added privacy. Window placement, door options, even tinting—it’s all customizable. You’re not stuck with a one-size-fits-all shell.
