Projection Mapping for Domes, Buildings and Events

Projection mapping turns a surface into a moving display: a dome, a building facade, or a stage. The content is shaped to the surface, so the image follows its curves and edges. The Dome House plans mapped shows for our projection domes, for buildings, and for events, with systems, installation, calibration, and show operation quoted per project.

What it is

What Is Projection Mapping?

Projection mapping, also called video mapping, is projecting video onto a three-dimensional surface so the picture fits the surface's shape. Instead of a flat screen, the object itself becomes the display: the curve of a dome, the columns and windows of a building, the set pieces of a stage. The content is designed to the surface, and the projectors are aligned and blended so every part of the image lands where it should.

How a mapped show comes together

  1. 01

Survey the surface: its size, shape, color, and texture, plus where the projectors and the audience can go.

  2. 02

Shape the content to the surface. Bring your own, or ask about custom content coordinated through our production partners.

  3. 03

Place, align, and blend the projectors so the image follows every curve and edge.

  4. 04

Preview the show, then run it, with technical staffing available for the run of show.

Where it works

Where Projection Mapping Works

Almost any surface the projectors can reach can become the display. These are the places it's used most for events, launches, and celebrations.

Inside a projection dome

The dome is the screen: one image overhead and all around the audience. Our projection domes use the same frames as our event domes.

On a dome's exterior

Mapped onto the outside of a dome, content turns the structure itself into a landmark for a launch or a night event.

Building facades and landmarks

Facades, monuments, and civic buildings for celebrations, openings, and anniversaries, planned with the building's owner.

Stages and event spaces

Stages, set pieces, and walls mapped for conferences, keynotes, and shows.

Brand activations and reveals

Products, vehicles, and sculptures mapped for a reveal, so the object itself tells the story.

Immersive dining and exhibits

Rooms and dome interiors for immersive dining, digital art, and exhibits.

Planning

What a Mapped Show Needs

A few things decide how a show looks and what it takes to run, and we confirm each one with you during planning. Need help? Call (866) 767-3117.

Darkness

Projection needs darkness to look its best, so outdoor shows run after dusk and indoor shows need control of the room's light.

The surface

Its size, shape, color, and texture set how many projectors it takes and where they go.

Projectors and power

Positions with a clear line to the surface, and power for the projection system and AV, confirmed during planning.

The audience

A viewing area with a good line to the surface, and agreed setup, show, and removal windows.

Permission

For a building, the owner's OK; for public buildings and public spaces, the city or agency that manages them.

Content

Bring your own content, or ask about adaptation or custom content through our production partners.

Projection domes

Mapping Inside a Projection Dome

Inside a projection dome the whole interior is the screen, and the audience sits inside the image. Projector count, resolution, audio, and power are configured for your dome size, content, and venue when we quote the project. Three tiers, sized to the project. See projection dome rentals.

  • Standard

Budget-friendly 1080p or 2K projection for ambient visuals, presentations, and smaller domes.

  • Better

Brighter, blended coverage for larger audiences and richer immersive content.

  • Best

Top-tier 4K configurations with laser projector choices for flagship shows and installations.

Questions, answered

Projection Mapping FAQs

What is projection mapping?

Projection mapping, also called video mapping, projects video onto a three-dimensional surface so the picture fits its shape: a dome, a building facade, a stage, or an object. The content is designed to the surface, and the projectors are aligned so every part of the image lands where it should.

What surfaces can be projection mapped?

Domes inside and out, building facades and monuments, walls, stages and set pieces, and objects such as sculptures or vehicles. Light, matte surfaces show content best, and the surface's size, shape, and color shape the plan.

Does projection mapping work in daylight?

Projection needs darkness to look its best, while LED holds up better in ambient light. Outdoor mapped shows run after dusk, and indoor shows need control of the room's light.

How much does projection mapping cost?

Every show is quoted per project. The size of the surface, how long the content runs, the number of projectors, the site work, and whether new content is needed set the scope. Tell us about the surface, the date, and the audience, and we'll put together a quote.

Do you create the content?

Bring your own, or ask about custom content: it's coordinated through our production partners and quoted. Existing video can often be adapted to the surface rather than recreated.

Do we need permission to project onto a building?

Usually. Plan on the building owner's OK, and for public buildings and public spaces, the city or agency that manages them. Where the audience gathers is part of the plan too.

Can you map the inside of a dome?

Yes. That's what a projection dome is: its interior becomes a 360° screen around the audience. Projector count, resolution, audio, and power are configured for your dome size, content, and venue when we quote the project.

What should we send to get a quote?

The surface (a dome, a building, or a stage), the location and date, the size of the audience and where they'll stand, and where your content stands. Photos of the surface help.
