What is a dome house?
A dome house is a home built on a geodesic dome: a spherical or partially spherical structure made up of a network of interlocking triangles. Our dome house kits, the Tetra Glass and the Tetra Hybrid, pair a pre-welded aluminum frame with double-pane tempered glass (or glass plus insulated panels) in five standard sizes from 16 to 30 ft.
What’s the difference between your dome homes and stick-built domes?
Stick-built domes use wood framing, shingles, and insulation like traditional houses—but shaped like an igloo. At The Dome House, we build modern geodesic dome kits using precision aluminum struts and double-pane tempered glass. These are architectural-grade structures built for speed, strength, and style—not foam and stucco throwbacks from the ’70s.
Can I live full-time in one of your domes?
Yes—and plenty of our customers do. At The Dome House, we offer kits that work beautifully as full-time dwellings. With proper insulation, plumbing, and interior finishing, these domes function like any other small home—just with a lot more light and less boring walls.
Are your domes good for cold weather?
Very. The geodesic shape naturally sheds snow, and our double-pane tempered glass holds in warmth. Combine that with our optional rigid insulation panels and a reliable heat source, and you’ve got a winter-ready dwelling that holds strong—even in places like Montana or upstate New York.
What dome sizes are available?
Five standard sizes from 16 to 30 feet in diameter — 215 to 689 square feet — every one available as a Tetra Glass or Tetra Hybrid build, with custom sizes on request. Full dimensions are on our Dome Kit Sizes page.
What kind of foundation do I need?
Most Dome House customers go with a pier foundation on a wood deck. It looks clean, installs faster than a slab, and provides airflow underneath. That said, concrete slabs are also an option—especially if you’re building to code in a strict municipality. We provide engineering plans to support both.
What are your dome homes made of?
Every Dome House kit includes aluminum structural struts, tempered glass panels, a real door (no tent flaps here), and optional wood-grade aluminum panels in a variety of colors. These materials are chosen for durability, weather resistance, and long-term performance—not for temporary setups.
Do your domes offer privacy?
Yes, and it’s fully up to you. At The Dome House, many customers mix glass panels with wood-grade aluminum sections for a more private setup. Others use tinted or mirrored glass. And for the inside, we offer wrap-around curtain options that make privacy flexible throughout the day.
Can I insulate the dome like a traditional home?
You can—and most do. We offer rigid insulation panel kits designed to fit between the dome’s frame and interior finish. Spray foam can technically work, but most customers avoid it in favor of cleaner, reusable options. Add an insulated floor and a heater, and you’ll be good year-round.
Are dome homes energy efficient?
They are. Geodesic domes have less surface area per volume than rectangular homes, which cuts down on heat loss. Our glass is insulated, and our structural design helps regulate indoor temperatures naturally. Add solar panels and you’re off to the races.
Do I need permits to build a dome home?
Usually, yes. Some counties treat domes like standard homes, while others are more flexible depending on zoning and size. At The Dome House, we provide stamped engineering plans to help you navigate the process. It’s always smart to call your local permitting office first.
How long do your dome homes last?

Can I finance or mortgage a Dome House?
Financing varies by location. While traditional mortgages may not apply to off-grid or unconventional builds, some customers bundle the dome into a land + construction loan or use owner-builder financing. It’s worth checking with a local lender familiar with modular or alternative housing.
How hard is it to build a dome home?
Most customers hire a local contractor or handy crew. The aluminum struts bolt together using our guide, and the panels are numbered and pre-cut for easy installation. With basic construction knowledge, the shell can be up in a few days. Interior work takes as long as you make it.
Are your dome homes off-grid friendly?
